Gentle, food-first ways to support your liver, the organ that does most of your body’s detox work every day.
Is this protocol for you?
People often look into this protocol when they notice:
- Feeling sluggish or heavy after rich or fatty meals
- Wanting to cut back after a period of alcohol, sugar or processed food
- Wanting a gentle reset before a more targeted cleanse
These signs have many possible causes, so they are not a diagnosis. If symptoms are new, severe or ongoing, see your doctor first. If you have liver disease, abnormal liver tests or yellowing of the skin or eyes, get medical care before using herbs.
How it works: the three phases
1 · Prepare
Lower the load: less alcohol, sugar and processed food, more water and fibre, and daily bowel movements. Then rebuild your capacity (minerals from food, steady meals, good sleep) before any cleanse. In the SDM, Prepare takes about 4 weeks.
2 · Eliminate
Foods and herbs traditionally used to support the liver include cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage), bitter greens, beets, dandelion root and milk thistle. Add one at a time.
3 · Re-Build
Keep the habits that helped: regular meals, plenty of vegetables, moderate or no alcohol, and good sleep.
Safety first
- Skip dramatic “liver flushes” (large amounts of oil and juice). They can be risky, especially if you have gallstones.
- Milk thistle and other herbs can affect how some medications are processed. Check with your pharmacist or doctor.
- Avoid milk thistle if you are allergic to ragweed or daisies.
- Not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding without your provider’s OK.
