Parasite cleanses are popular online, and lists of “warning signs” are everywhere. The trouble is that most of those signs (tiredness, bloating, cravings, poor sleep) have many possible causes. Here’s a calmer look at when parasites are actually worth thinking about, and how to find out for sure.
Quick take
- Most online “warning signs” have many possible causes.
- Travel, untreated water, daycare and pets raise the odds.
- A stool test is the usual way to find out for sure.
When parasites are more likely

- Recent travel, especially with untreated water or undercooked food
- Drinking from streams or lakes while camping
- Close contact with young children in daycare (pinworm is common)
- Pets that aren’t on regular deworming
- Eating raw or undercooked meat or fish
Symptoms worth checking out
- Diarrhea that lasts more than 2 weeks, or keeps coming back
- Bloating, cramps and greasy, bad-smelling stools (a pattern seen with giardia)
- Itching around the bottom, worse at night (pinworm)
- Weight loss you can’t explain
- Visible worms or segments in stool
These can also be signs of other gut problems, which is exactly why testing beats guessing.
How to find out
- See your doctor and mention any travel, camping water or pets.
- A stool test (ova and parasites, or antigen/PCR tests) is the usual first step. Pinworm is checked with a simple tape test.
- Diagnosed infections are treated with prescription medicine that works well, often in a few days.
- Blood in the stool, black stool, high fever or dehydration: get seen the same day.
Guessing costs you time. A simple test gives you an answer.
Everyday prevention

- Wash hands before eating and after the bathroom, gardening or handling pets.
- Wash produce, and cook meat and fish through.
- Treat or filter water from lakes and streams.
- Keep pets on vet-recommended deworming.
What about cleanses?
