Gut Reset Protocol
A gentle, digestion-focused six weeks: one prep week, then three calm phases.
For people whose main complaints are everyday bloating, wind, irregular bowels or after-meal heartburn. It builds on the basics of the Gentle Beginner Reset and zooms in on digestion: calmer meal habits and reflux-friendly timing, soothing after-meal teas, fibre and fermented foods added slowly, and an optional short course of pre-meal bitters. No binders, no parasite herbs, no laxative teas and no fasting. It isn’t a treatment for any disease or infection, and it doesn’t “remove” anything from the body; it supports your normal digestion.
This page is the free overview. The full phase-by-phase Gut Reset, with the herb-by-symptom tea guide, fibre plan and safety notes, is in the Remedies Vault. See what’s in the Vault →
Is this protocol for you?
It suits:
- Healthy adults with everyday bloating, wind, sluggish or irregular bowels, or occasional heartburn, with no red-flag symptoms
- People who finished the Gentle Beginner Reset and want a closer focus on digestion
- People who have had a doctor rule out other causes and want structured, low-risk habits to try alongside their care
Skip it, or ask your doctor first, if you: are pregnant or breastfeeding; are under 18; have or have had an eating disorder; have inflammatory bowel disease, a bowel narrowing or past blockage, recent bowel surgery or swallowing problems; have gallstones, blocked bile ducts or liver disease; or have kidney disease, heart failure or a fluid or fibre limit. If you take any regular medication, or have reflux or a hiatal hernia, check with your pharmacist first: fibre and soothing herbs can slow how some medicines are absorbed, and some teas don’t suit reflux.
Call 911 or go to an emergency department for chest pain (especially with shortness of breath, sweating, or pain spreading to the jaw, neck or arm), non-stop bleeding from your bottom, choking after fibre supplements, severe sudden belly pain, or a hard swollen belly with vomiting. Get same-day care for vomiting blood, black or tarry stools, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
How it works: about six weeks
Prep week · Notice, check, stock up
Keep a 5–7 day food and symptom diary without changing anything, check your medicines with your pharmacist, look honestly at how much fibre you eat, and stock up on simple foods and one or two loose teas.
Phase 1 (week 1) · Calm and soothe
Eat slowly and sit upright; have smaller meals and no big late dinner; ease back on the triggers your diary showed; and choose an after-meal tea to match your main symptom (wind, a crampy stomach, queasiness or heartburn).
Phase 2 (weeks 2–3) · Rebuild regularity
Raise fibre slowly toward the US and the US and Health Canada daily targets with extra fluid, mostly from oats, seeds, vegetables, fruit and well-cooked beans; add one small fermented food a day; and give your bowels a calm daily routine.
Phase 3 (weeks 4–5) · Rhythm and maintenance
Keep the fibre and fermented food that suit you, consider a short, optional course of pre-meal bitters (two weeks at most), keep regular meal times, and repeat your diary to see what changed.
Safety first
- Add one new thing at a time, a few days apart, so you can tell what agrees with you.
- A bit more wind or bloating in the first week or two of higher fibre or a new fermented food is common; ease in more slowly.
- Feeling worse is not a sign that it’s working. If you feel unwell, slow down or stop.
- This is not a fast or a calorie cut, and it leaves out laxative teas and colon cleanses. Eat enough, at regular times.
