Rebalancing the gut with steady diet changes, fibre and fermented foods, and herbs used carefully so you don’t feel worse along the way.
Is this protocol for you?
People often look into this protocol when they notice:
- Bloating, gas or irregular digestion
- Strong sugar or carb cravings
- Wanting to rebuild after a course of antibiotics
These signs have many possible causes, so they are not a diagnosis. If symptoms are new, severe or ongoing, see your doctor first. Blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, severe pain or symptoms that don’t improve need medical care.
How it works: the three phases
1 · Prepare
Cut back on sugar and refined carbs gradually, add fibre and water, and get bowels moving daily. Then rebuild your capacity (minerals from food, steady meals, good sleep) before any cleanse. In the SDM, Prepare takes about 4 weeks.
2 · Eliminate
Herbs and foods traditionally used include garlic, oregano oil and coconut oil (caprylic acid). Start low. Going too fast can cause “die-off” discomfort such as headaches or fatigue.
3 · Re-Build
Reintroduce variety with fermented foods (sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt), fibre-rich vegetables and a diet that stays low in added sugar.
Safety first
- Oregano oil is very strong. Dilute it as directed, and avoid it during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Garlic supplements can increase bleeding risk with blood thinners and before surgery.
- If you have diabetes, talk to your provider before making big changes to carbohydrates.
- Recurring yeast infections or thrush need a doctor’s assessment.
